Cardhu Distillery History
1824 Established by John Cumming (the whisky smuggler actually started illicit distilling here in 1811)
1846 Lewis Cumming takes over
1872 Elizabeth Cumming takes over
1884 Reconstructed on new site
1887 Distillery expanded
1893 John Walker & Sons Ltd took control and changed the name from Cardow to Cardhu
1908 Distillery name changed back to Cardow
1925 John Walker joins (SMD)
1930 Scottish Malt Distillers Ltd. (SMD) take full control
1960-61 Re equipped. Stills increased from 4-6
1981 Distillery name changed back to Cardhu
1988 Opened visitors reception centre
2002 Cardhu changed the product from Single to Vatted malt and caused major controversy throughout the industry which lead to the re-classification of Vatted malt to Blended Malt in 2006
2005 Cardhu re launch the 12yo Single Malt

Important component of Johnnie Walker blends
Cardhu means “Black Rock” in Gaelic
Previously known as “Cardow”. Changed to Cardhu in 1981
Illicit distilling took place before 1824 – Cummings’ wife would warn him when the Excise man was approaching, often disguising distillation process with baking!

Admission charge There is an adult admission charge which includes a discount voucher, redeemable in the distillery shop towards the purchase of a 70cl bottle of Cardhu single malt.
Comments Parking is available
Location From Elgin take the A941 south to Rothes, continue for 3 miles then travel west on the B9102 for approximately 7 miles. From Grantown-on-Spey take the B9102 north east for approximately 17 miles.
